Arsonist Strikes Village:
A couple of weeks ago, Union residents were awakened at 4 a.m. to the sound of fire sirens. An arsonist had taken it upon himself or herself to light the debris pile behind the ballpark on fire. The only evidence found was a metal 5-gallon gas can. It took many hours to keep the fire contained so homes were never in danger. However, with the latest winds, the fire reignited & burned the yard of one home & was encroaching on a second. If it weren’t for our firefighters arriving on the scene immediately to stop the fire, it would have damaged a couple of homes. Both homes were evacuated to insure no one was affected by the fire or smoke. Because of these dry conditions, the village clerk will no longer issue burn permits for any type of burning. Right now it’s just too dangerous to even burn in a burn barrel. If anyone sees someone burning anything, please contact the sheriff’s office right away. If you have any information about this other fire, please contact the sheriff’s office, a board member or fire fighter. All information will remain confidential.
New Look to Water/Sewer Bills:
Village residents will notice a new look to their monthly water/sewer bills. The computer program has been updated from the 1997 version. It should be easier to read & after all the data has been put in starting in Jan 2005, should be accurate. The older version was deleting some of the files & payments, which at times caused problems. Hopefully, this version will eliminate all of those.
Items of Interest:
Many thanks to Alex Braszko for the flags he was able to get donated to the village. The cost of the large 10’x15’ flag to put on the pole by the fire station, cost the village over $200 apiece. This year alone, we have used 3 of those flags. If anyone else could donate a flag or the cost of one, please contact the village clerk or board member. Help us keep the colors flying!
Also, thanks to Tony Tellez for the donation of over 3000 spring flower bulbs. We are in the process of getting volunteers together to plant them along Main St & in the park areas.
If you are a cable subscriber, the village was informed that the company has filed bankruptcy & is no longer in business. It is up to the individual homeowners to make other arrangements for their television services.
Easter egg hunt sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, will be on March 26th @ 1 p.m. for children preschool to 2nd grade. Be sure to be early & bring a large container to pick up eggs.
Easter services are as follows:
Good Friday services will be at the United Methodist Church at 7 p.m., March 25th. Easter services will be at the First Baptist Church at 6:30 a.m. on March 27th with breakfast to follow at 7 a.m. We invite everyone to join us at these services.
