DOG COMPLAINTS:
Lately, the village office has received several complaints about dogs left out all day with no food, shade or water. Per village ordinances, this is considered animal cruelty. You are required to provide adequate food, water & shelter at all times. Leaving a dog outside in a kennel or on a chain with no shade in this heat is cruelty. When a complaint is made, a letter will be sent to the dog owner. If the problem is not taken care of immediately, the village can & will remove & impound the dog at the owner’s expense. Not only will you have to pay a fine of $100 per dog but you will have to pay kennel & if necessary, vet bills. Dogs cannot tolerate this heat when confined & will die very quickly. If you wonder how your dog feels, try sitting in their kennel all day long with no shade or water. This is an easy fix folks. Tarps & sheets of plywood work great to provide shade. Either make sure there is shade, water & food available at all times or put them indoors.
Also, we are getting complaints on dogs running loose, getting in trash, acting aggressive, barking, etc. This is also an easy fix. Keep your dogs on your property. As for the barking, this is a training issue. If your neighbor’s dog is barking & annoying you, talk to your neighbor. They can’t fix it if they don’t know it’s broke.
TRASH SERVICE:
In this month’s water bills, all village residents received a letter with the contracts offered to the village by 2 trash companies. Please take this opportunity to voice your opinion. The village board is interested in what you have to say. You can either mail the letter back with your comments, put a note on the part of the water bill that gets returned with your payment, or email the village office at villageofunion@yahoo.com. All comments will be taken seriously & be part of the decision process.
TIDBITS:
A lot of vandalism is going on in the village lately. Personal & government property is being destroyed & the costs are mounting up. If you know who is doing all this stuff, please either contact the sheriff’s office, a board member, or leave a message at the village office, 263-3865.
At this time there is no drop box for your water/sewer payments. Due to more vandalism, the box had to be removed. Eventually, another one will be put back up but until that is done, you’ll need to mail your payment or drop it by the village office when the clerk is there. Office hours are posted. Do not bring it by the clerk’s home. Village business is not conducted in her home.
We are in need of volunteers to take care of the flowerbeds around town. If you have the time, contact the village office. Any time that can be donated will be greatly appreciated. This is a good way for the high school students to use their community service hours.
