FIRE & RESCUE CHILI FEED:

Last Saturday, Sept 27, 2003, the department had a chili feed to thank the residents of Union, Lake Waconda, & Nehawka for their support. It was heartwarming to see so many come out, socialize, and enjoy some good food. All the different chilies were donated by village residents as was the hotdogs, sloppy joe, pies, cookies and cornbread. The department personnel are all volunteers and were pleased to see the support this community gives.

VILLAGE CLEANUP:

We had the annual cleanup this weekend. We’d just like to thank the residents for their cooperation that made this such a success. Also, we’d like to thank the following people for volunteering their time to monitor and assistance during the cleanup: Alex Braszko, Harold Trull, Robert Brown, Roger Hoback and Scott Kelsay.

VILLAGE BOARD MEETING MINUTES:

The meeting minutes and other information are usually hung up at the post office as a convenience to the village residents. Lately, they have been removed and/or comments have been written on them. Therefore, I will no longer put them on the bulletin board. Instead they can be found in the window at the village office. I know this will cause some irritation at the inconvenience and for that you can thank whoever has made that decision for me. If you have a problem you would like the board to address, don’t vandalize the meeting minutes or talk to everyone in town but the people that may be able to help. Come to the board meeting and address the board members. I know some residents are frustrated about some of the properties in town; however, we need to do things properly and not go off on tangents. We are not ignoring the problems, but there is a correct way of doing things. The Village Board meetings are the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm at the fire station.

PET ALERT:

One thing still to be concerned about is West Nile virus. If you have old tires or other areas that hold standing water, clean up the area and/or change the water daily. This will decrease the breeding or mosquitoes. The threat of West Nile is not over until we get a hard freeze. Also, we’ve heard a lot of complaints about neglect and mistreatment of your pets. BE ADVISED, YOU WILL FIRST GET A LETTER EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM(S). BUT IF WE CONTINUE TO GET COMPLAINTS, YOU CAN BE FINED UP TO $100 PER DAY PER VIOLATION! Not only can it become very expensive, you may also lose you dog. Call Deb at the office 263-6835 if you have a complaint or need some information on licenses. She volunteers her time to help the animals so be considerate, call during normal work hours so she can get them to the vet clinic. She cannot keep them at her home with her own pets and the village does not have a kennel to keep them in. New Licenses will be issued the 1st of January. A reminder will be noted on your water/sewer bill.
