Union Newsletter
September 2003

Chairman: Roger Hoback            Clerk: Deb McWha

VILLAGE NEWS:
Town board meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the firehall. Everyone is welcome. If you are new in town, be sure to contact the clerk to have your water & sewer service changed into your name. If this is not done, your service may be disconnected. Office hours are Tuesdays 12:00 to 2:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am to 12:00. The office phone number is 263-3865. Deb does not handle village business from her home as most of you don’t work from yours. Please be considerate and don’t just show up without calling first. If she doesn’t answer or call you right back, again don’t just show up, maybe she’s not there. This disrupts the entire household.

SEWER IMPROVEMENT PROJECT:
The sewer project is underway as of the 2nd of September. This project will include the replacement of all sewer mains from 1st Street to LaRue and Main Street to C Street. The lift station at the ball field will be replaced and moved to near the northeast corner of LaRue and B Street. The existing two sewer lagoons will be dredged and made into one holding area and we will be adding two new cells to the north of the existing lagoons. The sewer project has surfaced because our current system does not meet state requirements. The construction crews will be storing their equipment close to the pavilion so parents please keep your children away from the equipment.
For more information check the window at the village office. POC: Deb at the office at 263-3865 or any board member and check the Union News in the Plattsmouth Journal.

PET ALERT:
If your dog or cat is missing or you’ve found a stray, call Deb. We all know most pets are a part of your family and she will help look for them or if they are turned into her, she’ll just bring them home. THE VILLAGE ORDINANCE THAT WAS ADOPTED STATES THAT EVERY DOG OWNER LICENSE THEIR DOG OR DOGS IN THE VILLAGE EVERY YEAR. A TAG IS REQUIRED FOR EVERY DOG OVER SIX MONTHS OLD. THE COST IS $5.00 FOR EACH DOG AND IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN THREE DOGS AND THEY ARE PRIMARILY OUTDOORS YOU ALSO NEED A KENNEL LICENSE WHICH IS $ 15.00. Breeding Kennels will not be permitted within the village corporate limits. Since most of the dogs complained about are unlicensed, we are also concerned that they are spreading diseases. One other thing to be concerned about is West Nile virus. If you have old tires or other areas that hold standing water, clean up the area and/or change the water daily. This will decrease the breeding or mosquitoes. We’ve also heard complaints about neglect and mistreatment of your pets. BE ADVISED, YOU WILL FIRST GET A LETTER EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM(S). BUT IF WE CONTINUE TO GET COMPLAINTS, YOU CAN BE FINED UP TO $100 PER DAY PER VIOLATION! Not only can it become very expensive, you may also lose you dog. Call Deb at the office if you have a complaint or need some information on licenses. Please no more coming over to her residence without calling first about a complaint.
New Licenses will be issued the 1st of January. A reminder will be noted on your water/sewer bill.

VILLAGE CLEANUP:
Please don’t drop any more items behind the fire station. This is not a dumpsite. It is illegal dumping and you will be prosecuted. The only time for dropping off appliances is during the village cleanup.

Village of Union’s Cleanup Day is scheduled for September 27th beginning at 8 a.m. until the dumpsters are full that day. THIS MEANS ONLY VILLAGE RESIDENTS MAY HAVE ACCESS TO THE DUMPSTERS. The dumpsters will be monitored during the entire weekend. We do need more volunteers to monitor the area. We will prosecute anyone found illegally dumping. Last year it cost the Village extra money to clean up the area because the people kept dumping after the dumpsters were full.

Things that are not accepted:

WASHERS, DRYERS, STOVES, DISH WASHERS, REFIGERATORS, FREEZERS WILL HAVE A $5.00 PER APPLIANCE FEE PAYABLE UPON DROP OFF. REMOVE OR SECURE DOORS ON REFIGERATORS & FREEZERS AS REQUIRED BY STATE LAW.

PLEASE NO MORE DUMPING IN THE BURN PILE BEHIND THE BALL PARK. This is for yard waste, tree limbs or trees ONLY. ANYONE FOUND ILLEGALLY DUMPING WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. PLEASE DON’T RUIN IT FOR THE VILLAGE. THANK YOU COOPERATION.

BUILDING PERMITS:
Lately, there has been an increase in home improvements. There are guidelines you must follow. Most home improvements, which include decks and storage buildings, require a building permit before you start the project. The first step is to contact the village clerk and get a building permit application. Be sure to return the completed application to the clerk before the next board meeting (the first Tuesday of each month). Village board members will review it and if everything is correct, the chairman will sign it. Take the approved application to the county zoning office to obtain the permit. Be sure to call Digger Hotline to insure that there are no buried utility lines. The zoning office will not issue a permit without the approved application. If you chose to not follow the ordinances and begin construction, the county building inspector can and will stop the project and ticket and/or fine you.

PARK COMMITTEE:
The park committee meets the last Tuesday of the month prior to the town board meetings at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the firehall. Everyone is welcome to attend.
If anyone is interested in donating trees for memorials for either park, please contact Jean at 263-5115 or Deb at 263-3865.
If you have any spare time and want to get involved in our parks, which in turn helps our community, please contact one of the members Jean at 263-5115 or Karen at 263-2180.
The park committee members are in the process of taking orders for the current fundraiser. They will be selling products from the Current Fundraiser catalog from Sept 15th to Oct 28th. Please help us get more equipment for the parks.
The park committee is asking you to start saving your cans again. We now have a place to drop off the cans and someone to take the cans in for us. You may start dropping your cans off at the building behind the fire station. Someone of the committee will put the cans in the building. Please be sure that the cans are in bags. Thank you for helping us.
Reservations for the pavilion should be made as soon as possible. For those families that use it every year for their reunions, please double-check with Deb & make sure you’re dates are correct. Also, we need a point of contact for emergencies. We do not currently charge for the pavilion, but the cost is going up for the electricity use and bathroom supplies so please consider making a donation.
Mark your calendars December 6, 2-4 p.m. “Here Comes Santa”. Meet Santa and have your picture taken for $2.00. Cookies and Hot Chocolate will be provided.
At January’s meeting, we will be discussing the next year’s event and fundraisers so if you have any ideas or events that you would like the park committee consider, please come to this meeting. We appreciate any help or ideas the you might have.
